Welcome to a 2-hour mosaic workshop where you will learn the skills to create an exciting mosaic piece to take home after the workshop.
During the making session, you will learn the basics of mosaic. A mosaic is a pattern or image made of small regular or irregular pieces of coloured stone, glass or ceramic, held in place by plaster/mortar/glue, and covering a surface. Mosaics are often used as floor and wall decoration and were particularly popular in the Ancient Roman world.
We will briefly explore historical and contemporary LGBTQ+ mosaics and then use this research to inform the making process. The cost of the ticket includes all the materials required to make a small mosaic piece. You will be provided with grout and gloves to finish your piece at home (when fully dry) with an easy to follow YouTube video.
All tools will be provided, teaching and materials are included in the ticket cost.
About the facilitator:
John McNair (he/him), a Clothworkers' scholarship student, received his MA in textiles at The Royal College of Art in 2016, after receiving a first-class BA (Hons) in printed textiles at Edinburgh College of Art. He is a material designer and design researcher based in London. His interdisciplinary practice focuses on the intersection of design, textiles, ceramics and technology. His main interest is concerned with material practice, the creation and development of new innovative materials using high-technology alongside traditional craftsmanship; the application of colour, texture and pattern, in combination with strong attention to detail and quality. John’s core methodology is the implementation of design research and development through problem-solving, within the area of social sustainability and community development with the aim of improving human well-being and livelihood.
